Australia’s footprint on international basketball continues to rise and in turn creates an elevated rate and demand for well-resourced and educated coaches.
Basketball Australia’s coaching pathways continue to grow in tandem with the performance of Australia’s national teams and the quality of coaching talent continues to shine from the community to the big leagues.
“Australia’s coaching model is highly regarded internationally. The structured and progressive pathway ensures that coaches are well-prepared at each stage of their careers,” said Neil Gray, Basketball Australia’s – Community Capability & Education Manager.
“There has been a noticeable rise in the quality and number of basketball coaches, which has coincided with the improved performance of the national teams. The success of the Boomers and Opals on the international stage and our junior national teams can be partly attributed to the robust coaching development programs.”
Every breakout player would be able to rattle off a list of coaches that have guided the stages of their journey.
Think, Adam Caporn working on early foundations with Dyson Daniels to Kristen Veal’s time at the Canberra Capitals and her influence on Jade Melbourne.
There’s a massive demand for coaches at all levels and there are levels in place to support development.
“We recommend coaches start with foundations. This has been a key driver of the Introduction to Coaching suite of resources we’ve recently developed to set the foundations,” added Gray
“New coaches often fall into the role as a volunteer or interested club participant so they’ve been designed to introduce basic coaching principles and are accessible to parents, volunteers and aspiring coaches at the grassroots level for free.”
“All of the coaches that you see on the professional and international sidelines had a moment of motivation. Our goal is to curate a support network and continue to provide opportunities of progression, from the Aussie Hoops enthusiast to the big leagues.”
A new suite of resources have been designed for those looking to take the call to coach with their community club or those interested in developing an analytical mind for the game.
