Brad Giersch started his officiating journey at local association levels in St Kilda, Victoria and then North’s in New South Wales.
He represented Australia at many world events, as a FIBA licensed referee whilst also officiating in the NBL and WNBL Leagues. He was well known for his mentoring of multiple referees helping them in their own personal development. A truly inspirational person who was revered and respected by all in the basketball community.
In 2016, he was celebrated for taking the time to officiate an Under-12s game shortly after overseeing the NBL Finals Series — a testament to his passion for the game.
Brad was also a highly respected firefighter, leader, and mentor who dedicated his career to serving both his colleagues and the community.
He was the first arriving Station Officer at the Rozelle explosion and building collapse, leading his crew through a very confronting and challenging incident.
His professionalism, courage, and leadership during this event were recognised by FRNSW and he also received a Commander’s Commendation from NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Jenkins.Brad also contributed his expertise to the Fire Investigation & Research Unit’s K-9 team, leaving a lasting impression on critical fire investigations.
More than his skills and experience, Brad was known for his infectious smile and boundless energy, lifting spirits in the toughest moments. Even when crews were exhausted, he found a way to push forward. That same strength of character shone through in his own health battles, which he faced with unwavering resilience.
Our thoughts go out to wife Louise, his family and the community at this challenging time.
Vale Brad Giersch.
